Beautiful hike. At the top of Deer Mountain you are able to see quite a bit of the island. It's awesome! Maybe the best maintained trail I ever hiked. Starting at the totem center you follow Ketchikan Lake road for a mile (very steep) till you reach the trail head. You might also skip this part and simply take a taxi. From the trailhead it's about one mile to the first and another mile to the second lookout point. The view is very rewarding. Reaching the first lookout is fairly easy, reaching the second one already gets harder. Venturing further than the second lookout is only for experienced hikers. The trail is very well maintained and its almost impossible to get lost. As always, make sure to wear proper footwear and bring along enough water. Ketchikan prides itself as the rain capital, so prepare to get wet. Also Deer Mountain can get very foggy and beyond the second lookout you might even encounter snow. Make sure to pick up the free locator beacon at the Ketchikan Visitor Center down at the Harbor, right next to big bronze statue. Stay safe, enjoy your hike and remember: Take only photographs, leave only footprints!
